Lukashenko’s regime earned 1 million dollars in fines for protests

Based on the data of the Viasna Human Rights Center, Belarusians paid about $1,000,000 USD in fines under protest articles in the period from 28 July 2020 to 28 July 2021; 3,906 people were fined.

The amount included fines under articles for organizing or participating in an unauthorized mass event and disobeying the requirements of an official since these are the articles under which peaceful protesters in Belarus were tried. Over the year, the punishment has toughened, and the fines have increased by a factor of about 3.5.

It should be noted that Viasna does not have information on all the cases that have taken place in Belarus during this time, therefore, the total amount may be much larger.
